I plan to use my Skills, Education, and resources to make a Positive Change in Mental Health and Addiction Recovery in partnership with the Canadian Mental Health Association.

Updated: 2 hours ago

Mental health and addiction are two of the most significant challenges we face in our modern-day world. Often hidden from view, these struggles are exacerbated by stigma and isolation. Everyday, countless individuals battle silently, reminding us that mental health is not only a fundamental human right but also a crucial aspect of our well-being. I believe achieving lasting recovery requires a compassionate, trauma-informed and multi-faceted approach. With my holistic nutrition background, lifestyle coaching, platform and personal experiences, I am dedicated to building resilience, fostering meaningful connections, and supporting emotional, psychological and social rehabilitation within my country and across the globe.

The Interconnection of Mental Health, Addiction Recovery, and Homelessness

The pandemic, a global crisis that has significantly impacted economic decline, mental health, addiction & homelessness rates, brought unexpected changes to my life, reshaping my perspective on not only mental health and addiction but the housing crisis in profound ways. Losing my home to a fire was more than a physical loss; it stripped away my sense of security and stability. I found myself homeless for a month and a half, struggling with severe anxiety, depression, PTSD and social shame that made it difficult to seek help, even from my doctors. The isolation, coupled with my disabilities, created a deep personal void. Experiencing homelessness, even briefly, profoundly affected my spirit, leaving me to navigate a complex landscape filled with feelings of isolation and Immense cultural shame as a result.

DID YOU KNOW?

Understanding that a web of interconnected challenges binds with one another, resulting in mental health concerns, is crucial. Examples such as addiction and homelessness are just a few of many. Homeless individuals often face higher rates of mental health conditions like depression or PTSD, which are exacerbated by the instability of life on the streets or in unsafe housing. Similarly, addiction frequently intertwines with homelessness, acting as both a consequence of the hardships faced and a mechanism to cope with the emotional & physical pain. This knowledge can empower us to make a difference.

Yet, the road to recovery is fraught with barriers. Accessing mental health and addiction recovery services becomes significantly more difficult without stable housing. From maintaining consistent treatment plans to addressing the stigma tied to both homelessness and addiction, these challenges hinder recovery efforts. Programs such as low-income housing offer hope by providing the stability necessary to move forward. By helping to address these underlying issues and societal disparities, we hope to generate inclusive help and care.

Understanding this disparity underscores the importance of advocating for systemic change—creating trauma-informed approaches and bridging social gaps. Real recovery requires embracing humanity and fostering a society where dignity, support and equal access to resources thrive for all.

A beacon of hope within the darkest of moments

In my darkest moments, when despair and suicidal thoughts suggested that I should give up, in an attempt to find relief, I turned to numb the pain, not for enjoyment, but to cope with the emotional pain I couldn't express. Unfortunately, this coping mechanism only added to my challenges. But I was determined, regardless of whatever unhealthy habits had formed, to persist in finding a healthier path forward.

One night, unable to sleep, I got out of bed and decided to go for a walk. I felt hopeless as I stared at the cold, empty streets around me. The idea of jumping off a bridge was no longer a fleeting thought—it felt like an escape from a world that had forgotten me. Yet, in that darkness, I began to understand the depth of the human spirit. My survival wasn’t born of isolation; it came from a realization that I was not broken but human. This epiphany set me on the path to recovery, further fueling my advocacy.

A life-changing Encounter

Later, the next month or so after securing my first apartment, I met a homeless woman, crying in our community garden, calling for aid, who changed my perspective forever. After naively inviting her into my home for a hot meal, offering her a shower, some fresh clothes, and an emergency baggie of feminine hygiene products and snacks to go, I sheepishly began asking her personal questions regarding her story and what led up to this (i.e., her being on the street and battling with all these disparities, etc.).

Finding Answers Amid the Darkness

A key moment came the following day as I wandered through the river docks in my neighbourhood. I found the answers to my questions amid the darkness once more. I recognized that I needed to advocate for myself and my struggles if I wished to do the same for someone one day, alongside getting the professional training to do so. Not everything can be healed with just love and light. Unfortunately, the path to healing is messy and requires skill. This realization forced me toward a healthier path. I discovered that actual survival lies not in enduring hardship alone but in embracing our shared humanity and the support of others.

Holistic Healthcare and Nutrition: The Foundation of Recovery

My education in holistic nutrition has equipped me with the tools to address mental health and addiction comprehensively. Nutrition, often overlooked, plays an essential role in recovery. I have gained invaluable insights into recovery that expand beyond Western medicine. Understanding the critical role of nutrition in recovering both the body and mind, mainly when addiction exhausts vital nutrients, is crucial. I am passionate about empowering individuals with knowledge about how gut health affects emotional well-being. We can create a more comprehensive approach by linking this understanding with conventional medical care. This knowledge about the role of nutrition in mental health recovery can enlighten and empower individuals on their journey toward wholeness, restorative health & wellness, bringing hope to the recovery process.

Evidence Supporting Holistic Nutrition:

Emerging research underscores the significance of holistic nutrition in mental health recovery. Studies consistently reveal that a balanced diet rich in essential nutrients—such as omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and fibre—bolsters physical health and supports emotional well-being by nurturing the gut-brain connection. Clinical studies and meta-analyses even suggest that these nutritional interventions can help reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety, complementing traditional therapies. This growing body of evidence reinforces that proper recovery isn't just about surviving; it's about engaging the body, mind, and spirit.

The Compassion Project: Building Community and Social Wellness; Empowering mental health recovery through creativity, connection, and care

The impactful conversation with that remarkable Woman inspired one of my most heartfelt initiatives—The Compassion Project. This transformative effort is about dismantling social barriers and cultivating spaces where everyone can experience dignity, care, and connection. It is a potent reminder that we are not alone in this journey. Together, we can make a significant difference in mental health recovery.

The power of creativity in mental health recovery

Embracing the Healing Arts

The Healing arts were a source of solace and strength throughout my journey. Painting, writing, and film production helped me process emotional challenges and reignited my advocacy passion. For me, healing addresses individual struggles and builds bridges of empathy and compassion between people. During my homelessness, The Healing Arts- creativity and artistic expression became my lifelinepainting sessions on the beach with new friends, creating content with like-minded artists, and even attending group events sparked joy and lifted my spirits. These experiences proved that the arts are an outlet for self-expression and a powerful therapeutic tool for mental health recovery alongside social engagement.

Creativity as identity

Creativity has always been central to my identity. As someone working in the film, television, and fashion industries, it’s now a cornerstone of my mission to foster hope, resilience, and healing.

Community Events That Foster Creativity

Events like "Suicide prevention and wellness" workshops, "mediation/healing" circles," “Sober Curious paint nights", or “Women’s Only events" that foster spaces for therapeutic expression, especially for those seeking community and asylum from the chaos of modern society, after experiencing any of the not-so-great aspects of life. These initiatives reflect the profound impact of creativity and connection on mental health recovery, personally and collectively.

With the concept of the healing arts, The Compassion Project is not just about meetings or giveaways. These events serve as therapeutic circles, emphasizing the power of connection, social wellness, and collective empathy. This project has become a beacon of hope, inspiring us to believe in the potential for community-driven transformation. This initiative aims to bridge gaps while encouraging equal access and the protection of fundamental human rights. Imagine the impact of community potlucks with imaginative themes like “Princess Picnics,” where shared meals blossom into lively social gatherings. Local food trucks, small business owners, and community volunteers unite to distribute clothing, provide essential supplies, and address housing needs. These events are not just gatherings; they are therapeutic circles, highlighting the power of connection, social wellness and collective empathy. The Compassion Project is a beacon of hope, inspiring us to believe in the power of community and the potential for transformation.
